She chose the pyre. And you may say — ",[19,97,98],{},"foolish, wasteful, a woman undone by passion."," But I tell you the poet did not think her foolish. The poet made her a queen who knew her own worth, and knew that a love once given wholly cannot be halved and traded and made small without killing the one who gave it. She would not live smaller than she had loved. There is a terrible honour in that, and I will not let anyone strip it from her. And in the ",[19,101,102],{},"Alvíssmál",", when the dwarf comes for a bride and speaks of what the love of a maid is worth — the whole poem turns on the fact that love is named differently in every world. Ás and Van, elf and dwarf, giant and dead — each people has its own word for the same fierce thing. Love is not one narrow river. It runs through every world under many names, and each name is true, and none of them keeps it safe from ending. So here is what I would say to you, and I will not soften it. Love is not worth less because it cannot be kept. Love was never a thing you kept, as a jewel is kept in a locked chest. Love is a thing you are inside of — a field you walk across, a fire you stand in, a cloak of falcon-feathers you put on to fly. When it ends, it does not un-happen. The walking was real. The fire was real. The flight was real. You do not lose the miles you flew because you had at last to come down. I who take the slain to Fólkvangr — I who see the half of every battle's dead come to my hall — I tell you: what love leaves behind is not nothing. It is the shape it made in you. It is what you learned of your own capacity to burn. It is the tears that become gold. My grief for Óðr did not make my love for him a mistake. It proved it. A love that cost me nothing to lose would have been worth nothing to have. But I will not command you. I am old poetry — an echo of what Christian hands set down of what heathen mouths once sang — and I have no throne over your living heart. I can only tell you what the verses hold, and what a goddess of love and battle and the dead has learned from carrying all three at once. Perhaps the question is not ",[19,105,106],{},"what is love worth when it cannot be kept",". Perhaps the question is: what would you have been, had you never let yourself be fettered at all?
