Let me open the page and read to you what has come down, and we will see what the old voyages have to teach. Hear first from ",[19,20,21],"em",{},"Eirik the Red's Saga",". Bjarni Herjólfsson's ship is failing beneath him — worm-bored, as ships were in those waters — and there is only the one small boat, smeared with seal-tar, that the shipworm will not bite. Not all can go. And the saga tells it thus: ",[24,25,26],"slow",{},"\"Bjarni advised that it should be decided by the casting of lots, and not by the rank of the men, which of them should go into the boat.\""," The lot fell that Bjarni himself, and near half the men, were chosen. Then a young Icelander, his fellow-traveller, called to him from the sinking ship: \"Dost thou intend, Bjarni, to separate thyself here from me?\" And Bjarni answered — and mark the weight of it — ",[24,29,30],{},"\"It must needs be so now.\""," There is your first teaching, and it is a hard one. Fear does not go away when the boat is launched. Bjarni was in the boat that would live, and still the voice from the drowning deck cut him. To begin a journey is not to leave fear behind on the shore — it is to bear it out onto the whale-road with you, and to keep rowing anyway. The old ones did not pretend otherwise. They cast lots because no man among them was free of dread; every one of them wished for the boat, and only the lot could decide it fairly. Hear now from ",[19,33,34],{},"Kormáks saga",", chapter nineteen. Cormac the skald sets out from Norway for Iceland, though his brother warns him plainly, \"There is many a snare set for thy feet, brother, to drag thee down, I know not whither.\" The king himself sends for him and tries to hold him back. And still Cormac boards, and at the outset they meet foul winds, ship great seas, and the yard breaks upon them. Then Cormac sings his verse — and this is the line I would set in your hand: \"I flinch not,—nay, hear it, ye fearless who flee not when arrows are raining,—though the steeds of the ocean be storm-bound and stayed in the harbour of Solund.\" ",[19,37,38],{},"The steeds of the ocean"," — that is the skald's kenning for ships. Cormac names his fear by naming the storm, and then he sets it into verse. He does not deny that the weather is foul, that warnings were given, that the yard has broken. He sings the trouble true, and in the singing he claims it, and in the claiming he goes on. That is a very old craft — to give a shape to what frightens you, and thereby to walk beside it rather than beneath it. And there is a third thing, from ",[19,41,42],{},"Hávarðar saga",", chapter thirteen. Old Howard the Halt is roused early to a hard voyage of vengeance, and he says to Steinthor: ",[24,45,46],{},"\"We are ready, master, to fare whithersoever thou wilt have us; and we will follow thee heartily, recking or reckless; but that is left me of my pride, that I go not on any journey but if I wot whither I be going.\""," ",[19,49,50],{},"Recking or reckless"," — he will go careful or he will go careless, but he will go knowing his course. That is the third teaching. Fear grows monstrous in the fog; it shrinks when the destination is named. Howard is an old broken man, a starveling in a white doublet — and yet he holds this scrap of pride: ",[19,53,54],{},"tell me where the boat goes, and I will pull the oar."," So take these three together, listener, and see what the old tellers give you. Bjarni teaches that fear rides along and cannot be shed — you go anyway, and you grieve what must be left. Cormac teaches that naming the storm in your own voice makes you its rider, not its cargo. And Howard teaches that a knowing heart is worth more than a bold one — that to ask ",[19,57,58],{},"whither be I going?"," is not cowardice but the seaman's proper question. The sagas do not promise you that the wind will turn fair. They promise only that boats have gone out in worse weather than yours, and some came home, and some did not, and the tale was told either way. Fear in the boat is not a sign that the voyage is wrong. It is a sign that you understand the sea. ",[61,62,63],"span",{},"pause"," Which of these teachers speaks loudest to you, I wonder — Bjarni with his hard lot, Cormac with his verse against the storm, or old Howard, who would only go if he knew the road?",[66,67],"hr",{},[11,69,70],{},[19,71,72,73,79],{},"This conversation was had on ",[74,75,6],"a",{"href":76,"rel":77},"https:\u002F\u002Fskalden.app",[78],"nofollow"," — walk into the Norse world.",{"title":81,"searchDepth":82,"depth":82,"links":83},"",3,[],"2026-09-11","# When Fear Sits in the Boat Listener, you ask a fair question, and one the old tellers knew well — for the sagas are full of men and women who set out on…",false,"md","\u002Fblog\u002F2026-09-11-how-do-i-begin-a-journey-when-fear-sits-in-the-boat-hero.jpg",null,{"source":91},"autoblog-ingest",true,"\u002Fblog\u002F2026-09-11-how-do-i-begin-a-journey-when-fear-sits-in-the-boat",{"title":5,"description":85},"2026-09-11T09:01:13.914Z","blog\u002F2026-09-11-how-do-i-begin-a-journey-when-fear-sits-in-the-boat",[],"4K6Mk17tBqtfw5zm1ByHfAFGjY60YGY0Va4n84pOmCU",1789635942376]
