What makes a life worth the telling? Not the length of it. Not the ease. Sit with me a while and I will open the pages the scribes left us, and we will see what the old parchment says. Turn first to the ",[19,20,21],"em",{},"þáttr"," of Norna-Gest, that strange guest who came into the hall of King Óláf Tryggvason with a candle-stub hidden in the frame of his harp. Three hundred years he had lived, carrying that little flame — for the spae-wives had spoken his fate at his cradle and bound his life to the burning of the candle, and his mother had snuffed it out and kept it safe. When the King asked him at last, ",[19,24,25],{},"\"How much longer would you live if you could choose?\""," Guest answered, \"Only a short time, please God.\" And then he laid himself down, and let them light the wick, and ",[19,28,29],{},"\"his spirit passed just as the torch flickered out; and they all marvelled at his passing.\""," Mark what the tale-teller says next, for it is the whole matter: ",[19,32,33],{},"\"The King also set great store by his stories and held that the account which he had given of his life was perfectly true.\""," ",[36,37,38],"span",{},"long-pause"," Three hundred years, and what the King treasured was not the wonder of the years but the ",[14,41,42],{},"stories",", and the truth of them. Guest bought his long life with a candle; he made it ",[19,45,46],{},"worth the telling"," by carrying tales through it, and by giving them faithfully when a listener sat down to hear. There is your first answer, traveller. ",[49,50,51],"slow",{},"A life is worth the telling when it carries something forward — and when the one who lived it tells it true."," Now turn to the preface Dasent set before his rendering of ",[19,54,55],{},"Njáls saga",", that greatest of the Icelandic tellings. He writes of Njála that ",[19,58,59],{},"\"of all the Sagas relating to Iceland, this tragic story bears away the palm for truthfulness and beauty… it is, as compared with all similar compositions, as gold to brass.\""," And why? Because the men who told it ",[19,62,63],{},"\"lived on the very spot, and told with a minuteness and exactness, as to time and place, that will bear the strictest examination.\""," A hundred years passed between the burning of Njál in his house and the setting-down of the tale, and still it held — because ",[19,66,67],{},"\"to tell a story truthfully was what was looked for from all men in those days.\""," Hear that: ",[14,70,71],{},"truthfully."," Not flatteringly. Not to make the dead man taller than he stood. The saga-teller ",[19,74,75],{},"\"was bound to follow the narrations of those who had gone before him, and if he swerved to or fro in this respect, public opinion and notorious fame was there to check and contradict him.\""," This is a hard, cold measure — and it is the measure I would give you. Your life will be told, in some fashion, by those who outlive you. What they say will be checked against what you did. You cannot fatten the tale after the fact; the tale is fed only while you are alive to feed it. And Dasent names what makes the ",[19,78,79],{},"Njála"," men stand beside Achilles and Hector in our memory — \"in their mighty strivings ",[36,82,83],{},"they"," are unassisted by the gods.\" There is a cold honour in that, and I who am one of the gods will not deny it. Gunnar of Lithend, Skarphedinn, Njál, Kari — they moved through their doom without divine hands beneath their feet. What they were, they were of themselves. And so their names endure. But do not miss the darker undercurrent in the preface. Dasent says a thoughtful reader will count ",[19,86,87],{},"\"Swan's witchcraft, Gunnar's song in his cairn, the Wolf's ride before the Burning, Flosi's dream, the signs and tokens before Brian's battle, and even Njal's weird foresight, on which the whole story hangs\""," as ",[14,90,91],{},"proofs rather for than against"," the truth of the tale. The great lives in the sagas are lives already shaped by fate — Njál sees the burning coming and walks toward it anyway. Gunnar sings from his grave-mound. The doom is spoken before it falls, and the man meets it open-eyed. ",[36,94,95],{},"pause",[97,98,99],"lower-pitch",{},"This is the third thing, and the hardest."," A life worth the telling is a life met, not fled. Norna-Gest did not fight the candle; he carried it, and when the King asked, he let it be lit. Njál did not flee the fire. The tellings we remember are of those who saw the end and did not turn. So gather the three strands the sources give us, and braid them: A life is worth the telling when it ",[14,102,103],{},"carries stories"," — when something passes through you, learned or lost or witnessed, that another can sit down and hear. Guest's three hundred years were nothing without his tales. A life is worth the telling when it is ",[14,106,107],{},"truly told and truly lived"," — when what is said of you afterward can stand against the check of those who were there. Reputation, in the old poem, is the one thing that does not die; and reputation is only worth its keeping when it is ",[19,110,111],{},"earned."," And a life is worth the telling when it is ",[14,114,115],{},"met without turning"," — when the doom, whatever shape it wears, finds you facing it rather than fleeing. The gods themselves walk toward Ragnarök open-eyed. It is not a small pattern to follow. I will not tell you what to do with your one candle, traveller. That is not mine to say, and the poems do not give me the right.
